Amboras vs. Shopify: Is AI Really Ready to Replace Your e-Commerce Platform?

Because building an online store is one thing. Running an eCommerce business through it is another.

If you work in e-commerce, you’ve probably seen them. The Instagram reels. The LinkedIn posts. The “I just built an entire store with one prompt” demos.

And to be fair: they’re impressive.

Amboras is one of the newer AI-native e-commerce platforms making a particularly compelling pitch: describe the store you want, and AI handles the design, products, SEO, checkout, optimization, and even ongoing changes.

Amboras was founded in 2025 by brothers Amin Mokadem and Imad Eddine Mokadem. According to Amboras, they scaled a previous ecommerce venture from zero to six-figure monthly revenue, giving the founders first-hand experience with the growth, operations, conversion and technology challenges their new platform is designed to address. 

Amboras’s proposition is “the store that runs itself.”

For a new entrepreneur trying to get a store live without learning Shopify, installing a dozen apps, configuring a theme and hiring a developer for every change, that is genuinely exciting.


But then the question becomes: Is Amboras actually a Shopify replacement?


For a small, early-stage business, it might be worth testing. For an established e-commerce business doing meaningful volume, the answer is considerably more complicated.

Amboras solves a real problem: the app tax (but does it solve the Token Toll)?

One of the most appealing things about Amboras is also one of the easiest to understand.

Shopify is incredibly flexible. That flexibility is one of its greatest strengths, and one of its greatest annoyances.

  • Need reviews? There's an app.
  • Subscriptions? App.
  • Advanced bundles? App.
  • Loyalty? App.
  • Email? Another platform.
  • Advanced testing? Another app.

Before long, your supposedly simple Shopify store has become a small software stack with a monthly bill attached to every feature. Amboras takes the opposite approach.

It is trying to bundle commerce functionality into the platform itself: storefront creation, reviews, subscriptions, email, SEO, A/B testing, analytics, promotions and more. Its current plans include native conversion features and AI usage rather than requiring merchants to assemble everything themselves.

For a startup, that's a compelling proposition. Less configuration. Less maintenance. Fewer vendors. Fewer things to break. And honestly, we're excited about that direction.

But fewer apps doesn't automatically mean a better platform for every business.

 

The checkout isn't magic. It's Stripe.

This is where some of the AI e-commerce hype needs a little context.

Amboras' payment infrastructure is built around Stripe Connect. Its documentation says payments are native to Amboras but powered by Stripe underneath, with funds going directly to the merchant's bank account. It also says payment processing fees are passed through, with no additional Amboras transaction fee.

That's perfectly reasonable. Stripe is an excellent payment infrastructure. But it's important to understand what is, and isn't, being replaced. Amboras isn't reinventing payments. It's making Stripe easier to use. 

That can still be valuable. In fact, it is one of the reasons the platform is interesting. But if someone tells you that an AI e-commerce platform has somehow eliminated the complexity of payments, fraud and disputes, that's where we'd start asking more questions.

Because accepting a card is the easy part.

 

Payments, fraud and disputes are different problems

Stripe can process the payment.

But somebody still has to deal with fraud. Somebody still owns the merchant relationship. Somebody still deals with disputes and chargebacks. Somebody still has to decide what risk settings make sense for the business. And somebody is ultimately responsible when a transaction goes bad.

Amboras' current terms make an important point here: merchants are responsible for their use of third-party payment processors and for the operation of their stores. Its documentation also describes the merchant as receiving funds directly rather than Amboras holding them.

That's not necessarily a problem. Shopify merchants also have responsibilities around payments and fraud.

The difference is maturity. Shopify has spent years building an enormous commerce ecosystem around checkout, payments, fraud detection, disputes, order management and merchant operations. Amboras is much newer.

That's the part that gets lost in the demo.

An AI can make configuring a storefront dramatically easier. It doesn't magically give a new platform a decade of operational history.

 

And then there's Shop Pay

This is perhaps the biggest piece of the Shopify puzzle that gets overlooked when comparing storefront builders.

Shop Pay isn't simply a prettier checkout button. Shopify says Shop Pay can recognize more than 100 million users and gives merchants access to a global network of more than 150 million shoppers through the Shop ecosystem. Shopify also reports that Shop Pay can deliver significantly higher conversion than standard checkout.

That's a network effect.

A returning customer can already have their information stored. They can move through checkout with dramatically less friction. A new e-commerce platform can build a beautiful checkout. What it can't instantly build is a decade of shopper adoption.

And when you're running a store with significant traffic, a small difference in checkout conversion can be worth considerably more than saving a few dollars in app subscriptions.

That's why “our checkout is simpler” and “our checkout converts better at scale” are two very different claims.

 

AI usage is another cost worth watching

There's another part of the AI-native model that deserves attention: usage.

Amboras includes AI usage allowances within its plans, with higher tiers offering substantially more usage and additional usage available through top-ups.

That makes sense.

AI integrations cost money. But it introduces a different kind of e-commerce cost structure.

The traditional Shopify equation is relatively easy to understand:

Platform + apps + development + transaction/payment costs.

The AI-native equation increasingly becomes:

Platform + AI usage + payment costs + whatever integrations your business still needs.

And when AI becomes the interface through which you build, edit, optimize and operate the store, usage can become surprisingly difficult to predict. This is something we watch closely. Because “just tell the AI to change it” sounds free until you're doing it hundreds of times across a live store.

 

The other interesting question: who owns the content?

This is where things get particularly interesting for brands. Amboras is very good at generating e-commerce content. Its AI can generate copy and product imagery, and the platform now documents a full blog engine, media handling and export functionality. That's a significant improvement over some of the early limitations we saw when AI-native store builders first appeared.


But the bigger question isn't whether AI can generate a beautiful product image. It's whether that content becomes a durable brand asset.


Established brands often have thousands of images, product assets, editorial pieces, campaign materials, brand guidelines and years of content history. 


They need DAM-like organization, structured content, permissions, versioning, migration paths, integrations and governance, not just the ability to generate another image.
Amboras is moving rapidly in this direction. Its current documentation also says merchants can export products, customers, orders, content and assets.
That's encouraging. But for a mature business, we'd still want to understand exactly how content is structured, exported and managed before making it the foundation of the brand.


Where Amboras gets really interesting: optimization

If there's one area where AI-native e-commerce platforms could genuinely change the game, it's not necessarily store creation. It's continuous optimization.

Amboras is already building around AI-generated A/B tests, automatic variant deployment and winner promotion. Its platform can test elements including headlines, CTAs, imagery, pricing, bundles and free-shipping thresholds.
That's a fascinating direction. Traditional e-commerce optimization often looks like:

  • Find a problem.
  • Form a hypothesis.
  • Design a variant.
  • Build it.
  • Launch it.
  • Wait for enough data.
  • Analyze it.
  • Decide what to do next.


AI has the potential to compress that loop dramatically. Find. Test. Learn. Iterate. Repeat.
And that's where we think the future gets genuinely exciting.The question isn't necessarily whether AI will replace Shopify. It may be whether AI becomes the optimization layer that sits on top of platforms like Shopify.


Shopify's biggest advantage isn't its theme editor 

This is the part people often misunderstand. Shopify's value isn't that it lets you drag sections around a page. There are hundreds of tools that can do that. Shopify's value is everything underneath the storefront:

  • The ecosystem.
  • The integrations.
  • The Checkout.
  • Payments.
  • APIs.
  • International commerce.
  • B2B.
  • The subscriptions.
  • The fulfillment.
  • The analytics.
  • The developer community.


It's agencies and partners who have spent years learning how to solve unusual commerce problems. And, perhaps most importantly, it's the fact that millions of businesses are already operating on it.That maturity matters when your e-commerce operation becomes complicated.


So, Amboras or Shopify?

It depends enormously on what you're building. If you're launching your first store
Amboras is genuinely worth a look. If the goal is: “I have a product. I want to get online. I don't want to learn how e-commerce software works.”


An AI-native platform can be incredibly compelling. We don't think the answer is to dismiss Amboras. Quite the opposite. Test it. Just don't test it by immediately moving your $10M e-commerce business.

  • Build a new concept.
  • Launch a low-risk store.
  • Spin up a test market.
  • Try a new product line.
  • See how quickly the AI can create pages.
  • Test its optimization tools.
  • Push the integrations.
  • Run real traffic through the checkout.
  • See what happens when something goes wrong.

 

That's how you find out whether a platform is actually ready for your business, not by watching a 30-second Instagram reel.

What About Orders, Shipping and Fulfillment?


Building the storefront is only half of the e-commerce equation. Once orders start coming in, the less glamorous questions become much more important: How are orders managed? How do you fulfill them? Where does inventory live? Who prints the shipping labels? And what happens when one order needs to come from two different places?


Amboras actually has a surprisingly solid story here. Orders can be managed through a conventional orders interface or through its AI Business Assistant, which can take actions such as refunds and re-fulfillment. Inventory is tracked in real time by location and variant, with low-stock alerts and oversell protection. The platform also supports multiple fulfillment locations and integrations with third-party logistics providers. 


Shipping labels can be created natively, with discounted carrier rates, one-click label printing and bulk label printing. Amboras lists support for major carriers including UPS, USPS, FedEx, DHL, Royal Mail, DPD, GLS and others.


For merchants using a 3PL, Amboras integrates with providers including ShipBob, ShipMonk, ShipHero and Easyship, while saying that most major 3PLs can be connected and that custom 3PLs can be wired in via webhooks.


So far, so good.


But there are some important operational questions that aren't as clearly answered.
Split and partial fulfillment is one of them. Amboras publicly documents multi-location inventory and multiple 3PL integrations, but we couldn't find clear documentation confirming whether a single order can be split across multiple shipments or fulfillment locations. For a more complex merchant, that's not a minor detail, it's something we'd want confirmed.


There's also a question around external shipping infrastructure. Amboras appears to favor native carrier labels rather than positioning itself around dedicated label and rate-shopping platforms such as ShipStation, Shippo or EasyPost. If your existing operation depends on a particular shipping stack, we'd verify that integration before making any assumptions.


And there doesn't appear to be a full warehouse management system hiding underneath the storefront. Amboras can connect your ecommerce operation to warehouses and 3PLs, but that is different from providing an enterprise WMS with sophisticated receiving, bin management, pick-path optimization and warehouse workflows.


The AI caveat 

This is where we'd apply the same caution we apply to the rest of the platform. Amboras' AI can operate on your orders and help automate decisions, but that doesn't mean you should hand over operational responsibility without oversight.


An AI assistant can refund an order. It doesn't necessarily understand why that particular customer should not be refunded.
It can suggest a reorder point. It doesn't know that your supplier is about to discontinue the SKU unless that information exists somewhere it can access. It can help manage fulfillment. It doesn't eliminate the need to understand whether your 3PL can actually handle the fulfillment scenarios your business generates.


That's the broader theme with AI-native commerce platforms:


Automation reduces the amount of work humans have to do. It doesn't eliminate the need for humans to understand what the system is doing.

For a straightforward DTC operation, Amboras' combination of AI-assisted order management, native shipping and 3PL integrations could be a genuine advantage.


For a complex operation, with split shipments, multiple warehouses, sophisticated routing, wholesale orders or highly customized fulfillment, the details matter considerably more.


And those are exactly the details we'd test before migrating a live business.

 

The interesting story here isn't really Amboras vs. Shopify.

It's traditional e-commerce software vs. AI-native e-commerce. And that shift is very real.
Amboras is showing what happens when the interface to an e-commerce platform becomes a conversation rather than an admin dashboard.
But the best AI e-commerce platforms of the future won't just build beautiful stores.


They understand customers, test continuously, optimize conversion and manage merchandising. They'll identify problems before merchants see them. 


And they'll do all of that without sacrificing the infrastructure mature businesses rely on.
That's the opportunity we're watching.


Because we don't think the future of e-commerce is necessarily about replacing platforms like Shopify. It may be about making them dramatically smarter.


And when that happens, the winning combination could be pretty powerful: Shopify underneath. AI on top. Humans making the important decisions.
