We weren't expecting this one.
Total Commerce has officially been awarded Shopify Platinum Partner.
It’s not like we've suddenly started doing something different. We've been building, migrating, integrating, and growing Shopify stores for more than a decade.
It is an important milestone for our team and one that represents more than a change of badge.
Platinum sits at the very top of Shopify's current Partner Program, and Shopify describes Platinum Partners as partners tailored to global enterprise businesses. For a founder-led Shopify team like ours, that's a pretty meaningful recognition.
So, what does "Shopify Partner" actually mean?
Shopify has a global Partner Program for agencies, consultancies, systems integrators, developers, and other organizations that help merchants build and grow on the platform.
Partners progress through five tiers:
Registered > Select > Plus > Premier > Platinum
The tiers aren't simply a measure of how long a company has been working with Shopify. Shopify's current program is performance-based, with progression tied to things like commercial impact and credentials. Higher tiers also come with additional benefits across business development, training and education, and marketing.
The distinction matters because a Shopify Partner can mean a lot of different things. A freelancer building a handful of stores and a global enterprise commerce consultancy can both be Shopify Partners, but they aren't necessarily operating at the same scale or with the same level of demonstrated impact.
Twelve years in the Shopify ecosystem
There's a perception that Shopify's highest partner tiers are populated primarily by very large agencies, and honestly, there is a reason for that.
Shopify's own Partner Directory describes:
-
Select Partners as typically suited to small and medium-sized businesses
-
Plus Partners as typically suited to mid-market and larger businesses
-
Premier Partners as designed for large enterprises
-
Platinum Partners as tailored to global enterprise businesses.
Total Commerce doesn't look like a traditional global agency.
We're intentionally a relatively small, senior team. We've built the business around experienced people, direct client relationships, technical depth, and solving complicated commerce problems, not around having hundreds of people on payroll.
So seeing Platinum next to Total Commerce was a particularly nice surprise.
A deliberately small, senior-led Shopify agency
Over the years, we've worked on Shopify projects that go well beyond changing a theme or launching a storefront.
We've helped merchants migrate from other platforms. We've worked through complex ERP, POS, inventory, and operational integrations. We've built Shopify Plus stores. We've worked on B2B and wholesale implementations. We've helped established brands rethink their storefronts, improve conversion, clean up technical architecture, and build systems that can actually support growth.
In other words, we've spent a lot of time working on the parts of e-commerce that aren't always visible on the homepage.
That's the work we like. And it’s the work we excel at.
But it’s also the work that has allowed us to build a long-term relationship with Shopify.
Over a decade of Shopify experience and many more to come
We've been working with Shopify for over a decade now. That's long enough to have watched the platform change dramatically.
We've seen Shopify evolve from a relatively straightforward e-commerce platform into infrastructure capable of supporting sophisticated international, B2B, retail, enterprise, and omnichannel businesses. And we've evolved alongside it.
That’s meant learning new APIs, new architecture patterns, new sales channels, Shopify Plus features, B2B functionality, POS, integrations, performance considerations, accessibility requirements, and an increasingly complex commerce ecosystem.
And we're still learning. In fact, that's probably one of the things we value most about being part of the Shopify ecosystem: there's always another problem to solve.
A small team with enterprise-level problems
The Platinum recognition also reinforces something we've believed for a long time:
You don't need to be a massive agency to work on massive e-commerce problems.
Our clients don't hire us because we have the biggest team. They hire us because they need people who understand Shopify deeply and can think beyond the storefront.
Sometimes that means a migration. Sometimes it's an ERP integration. Sometimes it's a Shopify Plus or B2B architecture question. Sometimes the problem is a slow storefront, a messy tech stack, an operational bottleneck, or a site that looks great but isn't converting. And sometimes the answer is that Shopify isn't the problem at all.
Our job is to figure out what actually needs fixing. And we’re really good at our jobs.
What Platinum means for our clients
The Platinum designation doesn't magically change the way we work. We're still the same Total Commerce team.
You'll still work directly with experienced people. We'll still ask too many questions before touching an existing store. We'll still care about what's happening behind the storefront as much as what's happening on it.
But the recognition is useful because it provides another external signal of the depth and scale of our Shopify work. Shopify's Partner Program provides higher-tier partners with additional benefits across business development, education, training, and marketing. Platinum also sits within the group of tiers eligible for Shopify's Partner Directory.
For us, though, the biggest benefit is simpler:
It's nice to have Shopify recognize what our clients have already known for years.
From Registered to Platinum
We didn't set out all those years ago with a plan to become a Platinum Partner. There wasn't a Platinum badge back then.
We set out to build good Shopify stores. Then came bigger stores. Harder migrations.More complicated integrations. Shopify Plus. B2B. International commerce. Retail and POS. More ambitious brands. More interesting problems.
Keep them coming!
