The Challenge
Tilepix, a brand offering customizable wall art solutions, faced a critical challenge on Shopify: the platform’s native three-variant limit. Tilepix needed an additional option to accommodate its product customization and selection process. Without this, TilePix could not offer the full breadth of their numerous selections for customers, which could lead to lost sales and a subpar shopping experience.
The Solution
Rather than accepting the constraint, we engineered a clever workaround that effectively created a fourth variant option without having to have every single variant as a product, which would have increased their products by thousands.
Variants as products is an acceptable solution for stores with a highly customizable product offering, but we wanted to provide something that worked for the client on the back-end as well as provide a seamless experience for customers on the front-end.
Instead of treating color as a standard variant, we restructured the product architecture so that each color was actually a separate product. This allowed us to bypass Shopify’s three-variant restriction while maintaining a seamless, user-friendly selection process.
There were also fulfilment and operations considerations from the company. Many operations and production departments need specific information and line items passed through with the order and this was a huge aspect of the solution.
